About St. Michael's School

    Headmaster's Message

"One of the most important elements of any school is the stability, dedication and enthusiasm of its staff. The majority of our staff have been at the school many years and we recruit well qualified, experienced individuals who tend to stay with us, helping to create the family atmosphere we are proud of. Our teachers get the best out of our pupils, working with each individual and adapting a flexible approach to the curriculum and its teaching to suit the needs of our learners.

We have a culture of small class sizes and as a result, can give each pupil the attention they deserve and help them shine. Above all, I believe pupils should be happy in a school, enjoy the process of learning and feel proud
of the successes they achieve. It is important to see pupils leaving school not just with excellent examination results, but with happy memories of their time at St.Michael’s."

  • A Culture of Excellence

A Culture of Excellence with Strong Foundations

St. Michael’s School was first established in 1923 and has been situated in Bryn since 1928. The school has a stable management history and its founders, the Rees brothers built its reputation of strong academic success. They retired and were replaced by former head boy, Mr Vaughan-Evans in 1962. The school continued to grow and thrive under his leadership and the present Headmaster, Mr Daniel Sheehan took up the legacy in 1994.
His emphasis remains on setting high standards, promoting and developing the culture of academic excellence we have seen at the school’s core since its foundation more than 85 years ago.

The Preparatory School was established in 1981 and has grown substantially. There are now more than 400 pupils in the whole school. Both Preparatory and Senior Schools have always been fully co-educational.
  • Pastoral Care

Pastoral Care: The St. Mike's Family

We like to think of each Form as something of a family unit. Normally, the Form Teacher will move up the school with their pupils and is therefore well placed to offer the support, encouragement and guidance achieved by such close, stable relationships. This system of support provides our pupils with someone to turn to if they are worried or concerned. In addition two members of staff have special responsibility for counselling and pastoral care and offer a space where young people can talk in confidence and work through any problems with a sympathetic, experienced and understanding adult.
PSHEE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education) is built into our timetable with weekly sessions and offers a chance to learn about and discuss, within their Form Group, the issues affecting their lives. Our PSHEE sessions are tailored to the needs of each year group. At the end of every term, one to one meetings are arranged with Form Teachers where pupils discuss their progress, targets and also talk through any concerns. Similar meetings can also be arranged with the Heads of Year.
  • Fostering Academic Excellence

    Fostering Academic Excellence

In 2008 we were praised by Estyn: "Pupils of all ages have a very good attitude to learning. They are exceptionally well motivated, with a strong drive to succeed."
St. Michael’s is a local school with a national reputation, consistently listed in the UK top 100 Independent Schools for A level results. We have regularly been placed first Co-Educational Independent School in Wales for GCSE results, at times achieving a remarkable 75% at grade A and A*. Almost all of our sixth form pupils go on to the universities of their choice and we have a long tradition of sending pupils to Oxford and Cambridge. Our pupils shine academically and we are proud of the learning environment we foster. It is one where gifted and talented students can really be stretched, but also one which supports and encourages less able pupils and helps them flourish academically.

We provide a learning environment where pupils excel – small class sizes, flexibility, a strong culture of discipline and a positive work ethic.

    A Level Results 2007-2010

St. Michael’s was ranked 2nd in Wales and 28th in the UK at A Level in The Times Top 50 Co-educational Schools – August 2009.”

The school stands in its own private grounds of several acres in the village of Bryn which overlooks the Gower Peninsula. The school is close to the M4 and well placed for Llanelli, Swansea and beyond. We attract pupils from a wide geographical area and arrange coaches, which serve a number of routes, for pupils.
