At our Art Exhibition last week, St Michael’s GCSE and A Level Art and Design students celebrated their successes during a special ‘private viewing’ of their artwork, shared with parents, family and friends. Visitors enjoyed the evening and were able to discuss with the students and the art teacher the different themes in the displayed work.
The moderators’ visited the school earlier in the week and were delighted with the displays. Mr Burman (Subject Leader for Art and Design) decided to invite students’ supporters into the art department which had been transformed into a gallery of excellence, showcasing their talent. On display were examples of fine art, digital art, ceramics and textiles, all produced by the very skilled students in years 11, 12, and 13. The moderators from WJEC (The Welsh Exam Board) were very complementary, saying that there was ‘a very impressive variety of outcomes’ and that the work had been ‘created to an incredibly high standard’; as practising art teachers themselves, they even said that they found their visit to St Michael’s art department to be ‘inspirational’. Congratulations to all students whose work was shown at this very special event.
The Head; Mr Millington, was delighted with the evening and equally impressed with the level of work produced by the students. The art department continues to expand in terms of activities across the school, this year Mr Burman provided 2 afterschool clubs as well as a Master Class on Saturday morning, all of which contribute to the students understanding and appreciation of art. Next year the school hopes to offer an afterschool photography club and this offers yet another dimension to the art programme.
