Emma Dempsey

We are delighted to hear that Emma Dempsey (3J) achieved a distinction in her grade 6 ballet examination this term, as well as passing her examinations in Modern and Tap Dancing.

Aviva England Athletics Indoor U20 U17 U15 Championships NIA

Sprint specialist Evan Jenkins won the middle boys 400m gold medal at the Welsh Schools’ Athletics Championships at Brecon on Saturday 3rd July and has been selected to represent Wales in Glasgow in the 400m and 4 X 400m relay in Glasgow on 17th July.

Jade Williams – the fastest woman in Wales –ranked no. 1 in the UK for 800m – has just finished an extremely busy summer term with ‘a crazy 3 weeks’. During the term attended a dream athletics master class with her Olympic Heroine, Dame Kelly Holmes at Loughborough College. On Saturday 26th June she attended the final of the Miss Wales Competition in Cardiff. She then flew to New York after being invited to Princeton University, New Jersey. USA (Alumni: Michelle Obama, John Forbes Nash (A Beautiful Mind – still there!), Albert Einstein). It was ‘an unbelievable experience’ for Jade.

She has also been invited to Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA (Alumni: Barack Obama) on October 22nd . Both Universities have outstanding Athletics Facilities. Jade and I are extremely grateful to former St. Michael’s and Princeton student Raphael Corkhill for his invaluable advice and assistance with the American Universities.

Summer Fayre 2010

This is an invitation to our Summer Fayre on Friday, 25thJune 2010, which will be held in the field adjacent to the school. It will commence at 1.00 pm until 6.00pm. Tickets can be purchased from the school office.

The cost of the ticket is £3.00 which will include entertainment, bouncy castle, children’s games, Karaoke, Staff v Pupils’ sports and much more. All profits to the PTA and Charity Committee

Last year was a great success and I hope that you are able to attend and participate.
Parents can park in the Prep yard, from 1.00pm.

N.B. If the Fayre is curtailed as a result of poor weather please ensure that you are prompt in collecting pupils.

Form 4 & 5 Maths Certificate Winners

Pupils from Form 4 & 5 have received their maths certificates after successfully completing the Intermediate Maths Challenge from the UKMT.

“ The UK Mathematics Trust (UKMT) is a registered charity whose aim is to advance the education of children and young people in mathematics. The UKMT organises national mathematics competitions and other mathematical enrichment activities for 11-18 year old UK school pupils. We were established in 1996 and last academic year over 600,000 pupils from 4000 schools took part in the three individual challenges, the UK’s biggest national maths competitions. ” – Excerpt from the Official UKMT Website

ICT CLAIT Class

Congratulations to our Form 5 ICT class in successfully aquiring their CLAIT certifications. CLAIT stands for Computer Literacy and Information Technology and shows potential employers that an individual is proficient in using applications on a computer.

Sixth Form 2009

In August 2009 St. Michael’s Sixth Form Students achieved the best A level results in the school’s 86 year history with 70% A grades and 88% A & B grades. The school was positioned 28^th in The Times Top 100 Mixed Schools at A level. Seven students gained the grades for medicine and 22 students achieved straight A grades. Viraj Ratnalikar secured his place at Merton College, Oxford to read Economics and Management. As a result the school is experiencing huge demand for sixth form places.

Young Sportswoman Award 2010 - Jade Williams

On Wednesday, 27th January Jade Williams won the Carmarthenshire ‘Young Sportswoman of the Year Award’ at the Stradey Park Hotel in Llanelli. Jade won the Senior Women’s 800m at the Welsh Indoor Athletics Championships at UWIC in January and is now ranked 1st in the UK in her age group.

On Tuesday, 19th January 3 of our Public Speaking Teams entered the Llanelli Rotary Club’s Youth Speaks’ Public Speaking Competition at the Llanelli Town Hall.

All 3 teams gave faultless performances and were excellent ambassadors for the school and our Junior Team 2 won the Best Team award with Cameron Joseph winning the Best Chairperson Trophy.

Team 2 went on to win the District Final at Crickhowell out of 6 finalists from South, West and Mid Wales including the capital, Cardiff. They now go forward to the Regional Finals in Gloucestershire on Sunday, 28th March.

Scholarship

In January we posted details regarding our scholarship exams 2010 for years 11+ ,12+ and 13+ on Wednesday 3rd March.

We are now informing parents that the examinations will take place at the school on Wednesday 3rd March 2010 between the times 9:00AM and 12:30PM.

Musical Play Oliver

St. Michael’s School is proud to announce the musical play of Oliver by Lional Bart at Theatr Elli in Llanelli showing on Friday 26th & Saturday 27th March 2010 at 7:30pm. Marathon Charity Cycle

Young Fast Track Mathematicians

The photograph shows year 8 (Form 2) fast track mathematicians Charlotte Ramsey, Philippe Rodgers and Clover Daniels. Charlotte and Philippe are studying Higher Level GCSE and Advanced Level Mathematics.

They have recently studied Advanced Trigonometry (Cosine Rule, Sine Rule, Area of Triangle), Trigonometric Equations, Diophantine Equations, Number Systems, Surds and Irrational Numbers and Advanced Quadratic Equations. Clover gained an A grade in GCSE Higher Level Mathematics when she was in year 7 and an A grade in C1 Advanced Level Pure mathematics in March 2010.

Public Speaking

On Tuesday 19^th January three of the school’s Public Speaking Teams took part in the Llanelli Rotary Club’s ‘Youth Speaks’ Public Speaking Competition at the Llanelli Town Hall.

All 3 teams gave polished performances and were excellent ambassadors for the school.  Junior Team 2 won the ‘J. B. Wheeler Memorial Cup’ – the first ever Junior Cup in this competition.

Sports Personality Awards

Lower Sixth student Jade Williams has been short-listed for the Carmarthenshire Local Sports Personality Awards in the category of Young Sportswoman. The awards will take place at the Stradey Park Hotel, Llanelli on Wednesday 27th January 2010. On Tuesday 6th August 2009 Jade was invited to Chelsea Football ground to accept a Sport Matters Award from her sporting heroine Dame Kelly Holmes.

A host of other celebrities attended the event including Sally Gunnell, James Cracknell, Marlon Devonish, Iwan Thomas, Alan Pascoe, Brian Moore, Roger Uttley and others. Jade is currently ranked number one in the UK in the 800m for her age group and her ambition is to run for team GB.
