6th Form Open Evening 2012

The school will be holding an 6th Form Open Evening on Thursday 15th March 2012, starting at 6:00 PM.

The school was ranked 14th in the UK at GCSE Level in September 2007 by ‘ The Times ’ GCSE Level League Table of the Top 50 Mixed Schools. The school was then ranked 28th in the UK at A Level in September 2009 by ‘ The Times ’ A Level League Table of the Top 100 Mixed Schools which further established our schools excellent A level results.

The pupils from Form 2 have been studying Tudors in History and had to complete their own Hans Holbein portrait. The winning pupils are shown with their prizes in front of their work on display in the History room.

St. Michael’s School, Llanelli is enjoying an excellent start to the new year with some excellent news. Four sixth form students have been offered conditional Oxbridge places – two at Cambridge and two at Oxford.

Cambridge – Aleena Haider from Swiss Valley, Llanelli has been offered a place to study medicine at Christ’s College and Bethany Somers from Hendy a place at St. Catherine’s College to study Vetinary Medicine.

Oxford – Daniel Jones from Ammanford has an offer to study medicine at St Catherine’s College and Hoey Lee from West Cross a place at Pembroke College to study Politics, Philosophy and Economics.

The school was also thrilled to learn that Hannah Washer from Manselton, Swansea has received an unconditional offer to study at The Royal College of Music.

Physics - Faulkes Telescope

The Physics department has recently registered the school with the Faulkes Telescope project. This gives our pupils access to two large telescopes, one in Haleakala, Hawaii and the other in Siding Springs, Australia. Students can operate these telescopes via the Internet during school hours. The students operate the controls and then photograph images of distant galaxies and other astronomical objects.

The picture shows Chris Shepherd L6 and inspirational, A level Physics teacher, Mrs Hilary Lewis, with an image of NGC 7635, an emission nebula in the constellation Cassiopeia, taken in school using the Australian telescope. We hope that all of the senior school Physics groups will use the telescope during the year.

Headmaster's Math Quiz - Question 6 Winner

There were many pupils who attempted to answer question 6 of the Headmaster’s Math Quiz. Of the entries, only Tom Walters, Form L6S provided the correct solution to the question.

He solved the question and was able to provide a clearly written and well explained solution which awarded him the £20 prize money.

Leukaemia Charity Research Fund

The sixth annual St. Michael’s bike ride from Bynea to Pwll and back was held this year in aid of the Leukaemia and Lymphoma fund-Beldon challenge.

Liam Hargreaves Gibson is seen presenting a cheque for £500 to Mrs. Gillian Bond aof the Leukaemia and Lymphoma research fund. The money was raised in sponsorship from the bike ride and a non-uniform day in school. Also in the picture are fellow pupils Oliver Lewis and Jonathan Jones along with teachers Mr. Dennis Davey and Mr. Mike Williams. In addition,

Mr. Williams completed the Gower bike ride and was sponsored by teachers and friends of the school.

Headmaster's Math Quiz - Question 3 Winner

Recently, our girls at St. Michael’s School have been busy helping raise money to support Children in Need. Mrs Harries (Secretary) and Mr Willoughby (President) are from the Gower & Llwchwr Estuary Lions Club.

Sixth Form Student and Charity Committee Member, Victoria Hinchliffe – Phillips and ‘The Lions’ have organized an Christmas Art Competition in the school to raise money for Heol Goffa.

Teachers Strike

We wish to inform parents and pupils of the intention of the leading trade unions across the UK to take strike action on Wednesday 30th November 2011, as they did on Thursday, 30th June 2011.

Teachers and other school staff are taking industrial action over the Government’s proposed changes to pensions.

As a result, I wish to provide you with advanced notice that St. Michael’s School will be closed on this day, unless the Government intervenes and the dispute is called off.

We are asking ALL parents to please sign and return the Teacher Strike Action 2011 form to confirm receipt of this message before the date of the proposed strike.

On Wednesday, 28th September Lord Ivor Richard paid a visit to his old school and many classes were introduced to him.

Lord Richard went to primary school in Betws, Ammanford and he passed the 11+ examination to the Grammar School when he was just 10. However the Grammar School would not accept him as he was too young. He joined St Michael’s in 1942, was inspired by headmaster Percy Rees and became one of our first fast trackers.

He won the Wightwick Scholarship to Pembroke College, Oxford to study Law. He was called to the bar and practised as a barrister in London for 10 years and became a QC. He became a Labour MP in 1964 and later presided as chairman over the Geneva Conference on Rhodesia. He took the title of Baron Richard of Ammanford in 1985. When labour won the vote in 1997 he sat in Tony Blair’s Cabinet and became Lord Privvy Seal and leader of the House of Lords.

Lord Richard has fond memories of his time at St Michael’s School.

St. Michael’s Sixth Form achieved excellent results with 17% A* grades and 57% A*& A grades. St Michael’s moved up the A level rankings from 58th last year to 44 in The Times Top 50 Mixed Schools in the UK. The Top Student was Deputy Head Boy, Oliver Xiang from Llanelli who gained a remarkable 620 UCAS Points with the following grades: A Level: Further Mathematics –A*, Mathematics – A, Physics – A, Spanish – A and at AS Level Chemistry – A, Economics – A.

Oliver will now study Physics and Spanish at Imperial College, London (Imperial is ranked in the Top 10 Universities in the World by The Times)

We were also delighted to hear that Jade Williams from Ammanford has secured her place at Cornell University, New York, USA. There were many other fantastic results and students, staff and parents are thrilled.
