St. Michael's School

Headmaster’s Foreword

Welcome to the St. Michael’s School WebsiteDaniel Sheehan

St. Michael’s School provides for pupils an academically challenging, supporting and safe environment where each pupil is treated as an individual and every student is given the opportunity to achieve an academic and personal foundation that will equip them for life. No school can build up such a strong reputation as St. Michael’s without a competitive but well-disciplined atmosphere and a highly qualified and dedicated staff. This environment combined with motivated pupils and small class sizes throughout the school, has allowed our pupils to achieve consistently outstanding results in external exams. As a result, the school in recent years has been positioned in the top three mixed schools in England and Wales (A level and GCSE results based), as well as being the top mixed school in Wales for combined A Level and GCSE results. We have sustained our leading position in a variety of external exam results tables published by national newspapers.

It is not just our academic achievements that we are proud of. We can also boast a school orchestra that has 40 members; pupil successes in a number of dramatic competitions; sporting teams and individual athletes who have won a number of prestigious titles and trophies, and annual Easter and summer concerts produced by the music and drama departments.

For children entering the Preparatory School, we provide a springboard for learning: promoting and developing confidence and independence. This enables pupils to continue their education from three years right through to ‘A’ levels at eighteen years without the disruption of changing schools and I feel this continuity is important and provides the foundations of much of the Senior School success. After a thorough grounding in the basics – English, Mathematics, Science and Technology – provided by our Preparatory School, pupils are able to enter the Senior School with a solid educational foundation, which is vital for success.

The Preparatory School pupils are able to use the facilities of the Senior School including our well-equipped computing facilities. We now have three working computer laboratories, which include two PC laboratories, and pupils have access to a computer each from 3 years of age. As you may have seen in the Local and National Papers, this thorough grounding in the Preparatory School enables many of our pupils to sit GCSE and ‘A’ Level examinations early.

Due to high levels of demand, St. Michael’s has opened its first boarding house. The first boarders arrived in January 2003 and since this time they have made important contributions to the cultural, social and academic life of the school.

You can find details of our pupils’ academic, musical, artistic, dramatic, and sporting achievements within this site, and I hope you can spend some time enjoying a snapshot of all they and their teachers have accomplished.

The future of the school is bright and secure and I look forward to even greater achievements and successes in the future.
