Physical Education is a busy department, staffed by experienced and committed sports’ teachers. At all times of the year there are skills being developed, competitions entered and trophies defended.
Philosophy
We hope that every child on leaving school in years 6/11/13 will have achieved the following:
- The ability to participate in and enjoy a wide range of physical activities
- To be aware of the needs of others in social and sporting awareness
- To appreciate the importance of fitness and physical activities
- To develop an awareness of the aesthetic qualities of physical activities
Teaching

Pupils are taught Physical Education from Nursery class to upper sixth (an age range of 3 – 18 years). In the Preparatory School the children are taught a variety of sports with the emphasis on enjoyment and participation.
School teams are, in the main, from the Prep 3 & 4 classes in Soccer, Rugby, Netball, Athletics, Tennis, Cricket and Rounders though wherever possible we include teams from the younger pupils.
In the Senior School a wide range of activities are taught with again an emphasis on enjoyment although competitiveness is encouraged. The activities are summer term: Athletics, Tennis, Rounders and Cricket. Autumn term: Netball, Hockey, Cross-country, Rugby, Soccer. Easter Term: Gymnastics, Swimming, Circuit training and Basketball.
GCSE Level
The department now offers GCSE PE for examination. Our first candidates sat in Summer 2004 and we were pleased to see our pupils achieve a 100% pass rate. Since then we have gone from strength to strength with our candidates, offering them a variety of sports for their examinations. We follow the Edexel course of 60% practical and 40% theory with examinations in June after a 2 year course.
