St Michael’s School, Llanelli is celebrating record breaking A level results. This year St Michael’s is ranked 22nd in The Times Top 100 Mixed Schools in the UK. This summer students achieved a staggering 30% starred A (6% in Wales) grades and 67% A* & A grades (23.6% in Wales) which should position St Michael’s in The Times Top 100 Mixed schools in Britain. 4 students gained Oxbridge places which is a school record.The Top Student, was Head Girl, Aleena Haider from Swiss Valley, Llanelli. Remarkably Aleena achieved 5 starred A grades at A level in Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Economics and French. Aleena also gained 11 starred A grades and one A grade at GCSE two years ago. She will now study medicine at Christ’s College, Cambridge.

The GCSE Results were outstanding again this year with 41% of students achieving starred A grades, well above the Welsh average of 6.1%. 68% of students gained A* to A grades, again topping the Welsh average of 19.7%. And 97% of pupils scored A* to C grades, way above the Welsh average of 66.4%.
According to tables released by the Independent Schools Council (ISC) and published in The Times on Saturday, 4th September, St. Michael’s School is ranked in the Top 20 Mixed Schools in the UK based on starred A grades only and 53rd in the Top 100 based on A* & A grades – and Top Mixed School in Wales.For the first time since 1996, to the delight of teacher and Head of Mathematics, Mrs. Kay Francis, all 21 fast – track mathematicians sitting their GCSE mathematics a year early achieved starred A grades. Preparatory School pupils Richard and Emma Discombe – Short passed their GCSE mathematics at the tender ages of 9 and 10 respectively.

St. Michael’s school sixth form students achieved 70% A grades and 88% A & B grades at A level and the school was ranked 28th in The Times Top 100 Co-educational Independent Schools and 76th in The Daily Mail’s Top 100 Independent Schools. At GCSE level pupils achieved 28% starred A grades and 60% A* & A grades. The school was positioned 62nd in The Times Top 100 Co- educational Independent Schools and top mixed school in Wales.Viraj Ratnalikar gained 4 A grades at A level and secured his place at Merton College, Oxford to read Economics and Management.
Six students: Hasan Izzat, Jenny Sze, Kerrin Vijay, Rony Sanyal, Ullas Jayaraju and Haroon Ali gained places for medicine. - 2008

Number 1 at GCSE, and Number 2 at A Level in Wales This years results were the best in the school’s history. 44.7% of Grades awarded were at A* whilst a further 29.8% were at A Grade. Analysis of results from The Independent Schools Council places St. Michaels in 76th place out of all UK Independent Schools. In Wales we are ranked number 1 at GCSE. No other Welsh School made it into the top 100 at GCSE Level.Of mixed independent schools we were placed 14th in the country. Congratulations to all our pupils, we are truly proud of your achievements.This year 5 pupils achieved 10 or more A* Grades. They are: Greg Powles, Nikita Poli, Viraj Ratnalikar, Christopher Pavlou, Hassan Izzat, Parvathy Vipulendran.Results at both A2 and AS Level were excellent. Plenty to celebrate this August for St Michael’s pupils. In WJEC examinations 50% of grades awarded were at A, with 75% at A/B. Our candidates achieved an average of 367 UCAS points, positioning St Michaels 2nd in Wales (Western Mail), 202 in The Times Top 800 schools in England and Wales, and 36th place in the Telegraph’s top 100 smaller school in England and Wales.
Laurence Mann, set a new school record for A level results with 6A grades, and 1B Grade. Laurence has gained a place at Queens College Oxford to read Japanese.Our top overseas student this year is Colin Fang, who achieved 3A grades, plus 2S grades (outstanding) in his Cambridge Entrance Papers.
23 students achieved 100% in A Level Modules across a range of subjects including Maths, Physics, Economics, English, Spanish, History and French.
A further seven 99% results were also recorded.In 2005 at the end of the hectic school year the St. Michael’s School Sixth form and GCSE students turned up to receive their much anticipated exam results. The results this year were once again excellent all round. 50% of our students managed 3 A grades or better, with nearly a quarter of our upper 6th going on to study medicine. We hope to see many of them achieving great things in the future and visiting the school to pass on their knowledge to those following them later on.A level results for 2005 placed St. Michaels 170 in the Daily Mail’s "top 200" table for both state and independent schools.Again this year, the A level results were very pleasing with 38% A grades, 74% A & B grades and 95% A, B, and C grades in traditional subjects. Many subjects saw a 100% C or better pass rate from pupils, all in all a remarkable achievement.Our pupils have now departed to commence their studies in a wide range of subjects, and it is definitely worth noting that 7 pupils gained the grades for Medicine, and will be commencing Medical school in October.St Michaels are pleased to announce another outstanding set of A Level results for 2003. Leading candidates included Praajakta Thackare (5 A grades at A Level), Oliver Rees-Jones Llanelli (4 A Grades at A Level), Katie Hooper ( 3 A grades at A Level), all of whom are to study at Oxford University.A and B grades dominated the results both at A2 and As level, with 75% of all grades at this level, against a national average of 45%. Both French and Spanish recorded 100% A grade passes at A level, A and B grades were in the majority in the majority of subjects including Physics, Maths, Economics, History, English, Music Technology, Geography, Chemistry and Biology.GCSE results were again outstanding, with 66% of all grades being A* or A grade.This years A Level and GCSE results have been absolutely outstanding. According to the ‘A’ level League Table produced by the Financial Times on Saturday 24th August, St. Michael’s School, Llanelli, is ranked 32 in the FT Top 500 Independent Schools in Great Britain at ‘A’ level. This puts the school ahead of all other schools in Wales.
The school was also listed in The Times ‘A’ level League Table on the same day and was placed 27th Nationally. The table listed both State and Independent and St. Michael’s was placed above many prestigious public schools including Eton and Harrow.
The Times also produced a table listing the top Mixed Independent Schools and St. Michael’s was ranked 3rd Nationally. The school’s success was highlighted on BBC Wales Television News on Sunday 25th August and in many national newspapers.The school’s high score at ‘A’ level is due to many of its Sixth form students studying 4 or 5 or more ‘A’ levels. Top candidate this year, Mark Sheehan from Llangennech, achieved 5 ‘A’ grades at ‘A’ level and 2 ‘A’ grades at ‘AS’ level. Terry Yip from Ystalyfera gained 4 ‘A’ grades at ‘A’ level and an ‘A’ grade at ‘AS’ level and will now study Engineering at Christ College, Cambridge.
St. Michael’s was delighted to hear that Jenny Yate from Dryslwyn gained a place at Liverpool University to study Vetinary Science. Tomi Makinde, Sonia Taneja, Gihan Ganesh, Ahmed Iqbal and Mark Sheehan will study Medicine in London.
Students at the school are thrilled at being placed above Eton in The Times League Table which is quite a remarkable achievement for a small Independent school in Llanelli.GCSE
At GCSE level, 19 pupils sat Mathematics a year early under the school’s Fast Track Mathematics scheme achieving 18 starred ‘A’ grades and one ‘A’ grade which is quite remarkable. Many of these pupils have been studying ‘A’ level Mathematics in Year 10 and will continue their studies in Year 11.Top candidates at GCSE level were Shiraz Sabah from Gower and Rebecca Fennell from Llangennech.
Shiraz gained 9 starred ‘A’ grades, 1 ‘A’ grade and an ‘A’ grade in ‘A’ level Pure Mathematics while Rebecca gained 8 starred ‘A’ grades and 2 ‘A’ grades and an ‘A’ grade in ‘A’ level Pure Mathematics.
