Information Communication Technology is taught across the curriculum and throughout all ages within the school. The subject itself has a great appeal to all pupils whether delivered as a cross curricular entitlement or via discrete subject lessons. We have two dedicated computer suites which have been refurbished with new equipment over the summer (2009), plus a range of PC’s, electronic whiteboards and projectors distributed throughout the school.GCSE and A Level ICT feature prominently in the options offered to pupils in years nine and eleven respectively. Consequently, both are extremely popular choices, studied by almost every pupil in the middle and upper schools.
All our pupils in year two learn how to create web pages via a web page design application, in fact the early stages of our school’s web page originated from our current year four pupils when they were in their year two.A course in Information and Communication Technology offers a unique opportunity in the curriculum for candidates to identify and solve real problems by designing information and communication systems in a wide range of contexts relating to their
personal interests. Information and Communication Technology develops candidates’ interdisciplinary skills, all six Key Skills and their capacity for imaginative, innovative thinking, creativity and independence.
The specification encourages the investigation and study of information technology in a variety of contexts. In these contexts the candidates are given opportunities to acquire competence, capability and critical skills through the creation, implementation, use and evaluation of a range of information and communication systems. Candidates from all cultures and both genders can develop their interest in, enjoyment of, and critical reflection about information technology as an integral part of modern society. The course content involves more practical work such as computer based digital video work and high level presentation construction. The syllabus is also more prescriptive in nature making clear what the examiners require and how the highest grades can be achieved.
Computing at AS and A2 is taught to those students who which to specialise in software and systems development; and to study computing at a higher level with a view to entering the computing industry. There is an emphasis on structures used in computing hardware, software and programming. The AS course comprises of three units – Software and Systems Development, Computer Data and Applications, and a coursework Project. The A2 course is another three units extending on the concepts introduced at AS. The A2 coursework project being an implementation on the AS project prototype.
All in all, I believe we have a thriving ICT input into many, if not all, of the school’s activities whether academic, cross curricular and extra curricular. - Computing
