Our Year 8 – Year 11 students have just returned from a fabulous Sports Tour to Malta. Three netball and two football teams travelled to Qawra Palace Hotel and spent five days sports training and playing matches against a variety of teams.
With busy days and equally busy evenings with entertainment including Karaoke, Quiz Night, Bowling and meals out in the beautiful capital of Valetta.
The boys, who had not played as a team until this tour, received a training session at De La Salle Sports Hall with EUFA local coach Stefano Grima, followed by a fixture that evening at San Gwann FC. Although they didn’t win, they gained much experience and the following fixture showed a much improved and cohesive game. Their commitment and teamwork paid off as they won their third fixture 3-1 at Fgure Utd FC – it felt like they’d won the World Cup!
Meanwhile, the girls travelled to Selmun for their first fixtures against older teams in Mellieha on a windy outdoor game in floodlights. The under 16s and 13s narrowly lost but the under 15s won and gave the girls some confidence.
The next morning was filled with a shopping trip and then they travelled to Kirkop for a set of fixtures against the National teams. The under 13s won their first game and again, the under 15s won significantly. The under 16s played an under 18s side in a tense match of high quality and narrowly pulled out the victory 17 – 16, who can now say they beat the Maltese National Netball team!
The pupils received many compliments on how polite and considerate they were from the hotel staff, the general public, sports teams and restaurant staff. They all mixed well with each other and visibly grew in confidence, developing a real team bond. They were such excellent ambassadors for St Michael’s School and we are very proud of them all.
