Careers Fairs, talks by high achieving past students and an eminent figure from Oxford University are just some of the recent activities enjoyed by our Sixth Formers as they seek inspiration for their own futures.
Angela Prickett, our recently appointed Head of Sixth Form, has got off to a flying start in terms of arranging activities for the Sixth Form and helping them to identify degree options they may wish to pursue.
Hywel Dda Health Board Careers Fair
Twenty-one students went on the trip to Hywel Dda Health Board Careers Fair in Llandysul and the students found this really useful, having the chance to speak to many different practitioners and gaining useful insight to the many career options across our health services – and the commitment that goes with it.
Oxford is in the Air
Former student Theo Davies-Lewis, who joined Oxford in September 2016, came back to school and gave a very useful talk about his first year in Oxford – the challenges, the myths and advising students how to best prepare for the rigors of University study. Theo is loving life in Oxford and I am sure his talk inspired other students to aim for Oxbridge entry.
As well as former students visiting, Theo helped to make an event possible when Prof. Peter Mitchell of St Hughes College, Oxford visited St. Michael’s. Prof. Mitchell talked passionately about his own subject – Archaeology & Anthropology, and went on to advise students about the general admissions process at Oxford. This gave students valuable insight as to how best prepare personal statements and some understanding as to what Oxford are looking for in their students.
Another former student – Liam Rahman is going to be in school later this month, October 19th, to talk about the application process for entry to Universities in America. Liam left St. Michael’s in 2012 and attended Yale University, so I am sure his experiences will be very different to those of Theo, and subsequently providing students with the knowledge of the very many different opportunities open to them.
At the beginning of next term, another former student – Ju Hyung Yoo, who left us in 2012 to join Imperial to study medicine is coming back to St Michael’s to give students an insight into his experiences at Imperial. Ju Hyoung is a student from South Korea and not only had to excel in his exams but also had to meet a high level in terms of his language skills.
Staff really do appreciate when former students come back to see us, it is lovely for us to hear what progress they have made in their lives and very often, current students really do take on board what a former student has to say.
And it’s not even half term yet
We have not reached half term yet but with the above activities and Mr. Ellis supporting the Medical Preparation Programme with lunchtime activities, our students are enjoying plenty of opportunities to help focus their thinking.
