The aims and objectives of learning a modern foreign language in the Preparatory School are to foster an interest in learning another language; introducing children to another language in a way that is enjoyable and fun. It also helps children develop their awareness of cultural differences in other countries and develop their speaking and listening skills.
Laying the foundations for future study, the curriculum followed is based on the guidance given in the National Curriculum. The children are taught to know and understand how to :
Ask and answer questions;
- Use correct pronunciation and intonation;
- Memorise words;
- Interpret meaning;
- Understand basic grammar;
- Work in pairs and groups, and communicate in French;
- Look at life in another culture.
Role-play and songs
A variety of techniques are used to encourage the children to have an active engagement in the language: these include games, role-play and songs. The lessons are made as entertaining and enjoyable as possible as this approach serves to develop a positive attitude in the children to the learning of modern foreign languages.
